Retired teacher Hüseyin Kurucan, 85, produces patented smart coffee tables in a small iron workshop he established 39 years ago after retirement.
Hüseyin Kurucan, an 85-year-old retired metalwork teacher from Denizli, retired in 1984 after teaching for 28 years. Establishing a small iron workshop, retired teacher Kurucan combined his experience and knowledge 8 years ago to design a table he named "Smart Table" and registered its brand as "Sehpam Akıllı" (My Smart Coffee Table). Kurucan, who was also selected as "Ahi of the Year" two years ago, has not given up on production despite his advanced age. Kurucan arrives at his workshop early in the morning and works in every department of manufacturing until evening. Kurucan sells his smart coffee tables domestically through online stores and also exports his products abroad.
Kurucan explained that the smart tables he produces, which are on wheels and made of first-class MDF, have a hydraulic system, and when closed, the table is 60 centimeters, but with a single movement, it opens to a width and length of 1 meter by 20 centimeters. He said, "I retired from the Industrial Vocational High School in 1985. I was assigned by the state to education for 28 years. Since 1985, I have had a workplace in the industry and have been working for 39 years. The state chose me as Denizli Ahi in 2021. The necessary documents were given by the governor. And I still can't get enough of working, I continue. I will continue to work until the end of my life. I am currently contributing at least 30-40 thousand lira to the state through manufacturing. I also benefit. My life has passed this way, working, and I am very happy. I started in 1985 by making luggage racks for cars, and picnic and tent frames. Today, I have reached a certain point. I started producing this smart coffee table and got its patent. Currently, I sell 8-10 units daily through a national shopping site, sales points, and our own website. Those who buy are very satisfied. Those who express their satisfaction even come to us to thank us."
